Time-varying causality between crude oil and stock markets: What can we learn from a multiscale perspective?

2017

This paper investigates the presence of time-varying causal linkages in mean and variance between oil price changes and stock returns for six major oil-importing countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and the US) in a multiscale framework that combines wavelet analysis and a modified version of the dynamic causality test of Lu, Hong, Wang, Lai, and Liu (2014). The results show significant bidirectional causal relations between oil and stock markets at the different time horizons for all countries. The causal links tend to be stronger at coarser scales and in periods of financial turmoil, mainly during the recent global financial and European sovereign debt crises. This evidence pr…

Idle minds are the devil's tools? Coping, depressed mood and divergent thinking in older adults.

2017

The main aim was to test a causal relations model of the problem-focused and emotion-focused coping styles, depressed mood, and divergent thinking (DT) in older adults. It was hypothesized that both forms of coping would have a significant effect on predicting depressed mood, and that problem-focused coping and depressed mood would have a significant effect on DT.Participants were 135 subjects with ages ranging between 55 and 84 years old, who took part in a personal interview and filled out several questionnaires. The statistical analysis included structural equations models (SEM).The initial model led to a final model endorsed by the goodness of fit, composite reliability, and discriminan…

Ischemic stroke and migraine in childhood: coincidence or causal relation?

1999

Although migraine is an accepted cause of cerebral infarction in adults, this association is less well recognized in children. We present two children with migraine and cerebral infarction, which we regard as migrainous stroke, though neither patient fulfills all criteria of the International Headache Society for the diagnosis of migrainous infarction. Review of the literature concerning examples of migraine-associated stroke in childhood suggests that these criteria are too restrictive to comprise the majority of migrainous strokes, especially in this age group. (J Child Neurol 1999; 14:451-455).

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: facts and uncertainties underlying the causal link between animal and human diseases

2004

Following an outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in dairy cows in the United Kingdom (UK), 153 definite and probable human cases of new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (nvCJD) have been reported, almost exclusively in the UK. Although exposure to the BSE agent is the most plausible interpretation for the occurrence of nvCJD, the causal link between the BSE prion and nvCJD is still debated. This review discusses the pros and cons of nvCJD as a separate nosographic entity, the scientific basis for a correlation between BSE and nvCJD, the validity of the current diagnostic criteria for CJD and nvCJD, the contribution of epidemiology to the detection of a causal relation betwee…

Self-efficacy and approaches to learning mathematics among engineering students : empirical evidence for potential causal relations

2020

Theories of self-efficacy and approaches to learning are well-established in the psychology of learning. However, studies on relationships between the primary constructs on which these theories are...

Sentimientos y teoría de la acción

2001

In this paper…

Is Khat (Catha edulis) chewing a risk factor for periodontal diseases? : a systematic review

2017

Background Khat (Catha edulis) chewing is a highly prevalent habit in the Arabian Peninsula and East Africa, and has recently spread to Western countries. The association between khat chewing and oral mucosal lesions is well documented in the literature. However, there is no concrete evidence on the association between khat chewing and periodontal disease. The purpose of this systematic review was to analyze the influence of khat chewing on periodontal health. Material and methods A literature search of PubMed, Scopus and Web of Sciences databases was carried out to identify relevant articles published from 1990 to May 2017. The inclusion criteria were all clinical studies that assessed the…

Alopecia areata and isotretinoin; coincidence or causal relation

2020

Isotretinoin is a safe and useful medication for acne management. Adverse effects are mostly related to cutaneous and mucous membranes. We present a case of a 24-year-old female patient who was on treatment with isotretinoin for acne vulgaris Grade 4. After 6 months of treatment, the patient presented with localized patch of hair loss. Beginning of alopecia areata in patients with acne vulgaris could be regarded as a side effect of retinoids due to anti-acne therapy. The exact mechanism by which retinoids cause hair loss is not known.
